This creation is Coloureds‘ (Matt Mooney and Nick Brewer) second, having only formed as a duo in 2009 and is a collection of four tracks: ‘Tom Hanks’, ‘Monocle’, ‘Tom Hanks (SSHH! THE DEAF HAVE AIDS remix)’ and ‘Tom Hanks (Radio Edit)’.
I see the words ‘Radio Edit’ and assume they must be doing well so far – and I’m right. These two have already been aired on BBC Radio 1 and have supported some familiar names like SBTRKT who played a set at last month’s Global Gathering Festival, and Holy Fuck – regulars at Oxford’s O2 academy.
I whack on ‘Tom Hanks’ whilst reading their Myspace profile and it’s strange to think that the two of them were previously in a hardcore rock band named Xmas Lights. I like the instant urge to bop and have a massive respect for the mis-match of samples that sounds bloomin’ complex.
If you don’t like a lot of repetition, and if you don’t like dance music, I wouldn’t go near this EP. But for those who love a bit of electro house, this will be right up your street with it’s Simian Mobile Disco-like pumps.
The first pause you hear is at the end of the second song ‘Monocle’, and I wonder when it changed from song one to song two, and realise the brilliance of their mixing. The ‘SSHH! THE DEAF HAVE AIDS remix’ is dirtier and heavier with the vocal sample from the original version repeated far more. This one would sound superb in a venue like The Cellar in Oxford.
A great EP with a couple of catchy, dancey tunes – next time they’re about in the city I’ll be sure to catch them.
