Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes is quite possibly the most eagerly anticipated album of 2011. The scruffy Seattle folksters with angelic voices stormed 2008 with their debut EP and LP combo. The band was totally loved on both sides of the Atlantic and 2009 bought with it a slot on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. Unfortunately, the band were completely over-awed by the vastness of the main stage at Britain’s premier festival as their delicate, beautiful sound was completely lost on an audience who had just experienced N.E.R.D and were waiting for Lily Allen (talk about dealing a band with one album under their belt a shit deal!).
The band released new track ‘Helplessness Blues’ earlier this year and spilt opinion. Some called it the bands best song to date, others, possibly disillusioned by the “nu-folk” (urgh!) movement of the late-noughties, called it old hat. But it’s difficult to judge what an album may sound like from just one song.
Well prick up those little ears, the band have released another song from their impending sophomore smash. ‘Grown Ocean’ will be the closing track on the new LP and may not go a long way to placate the fears of those who thought ‘Helplessness Blues’ wasn’t much of a progression. I, for one, think the song is lovely and can’t wait to hear the rest of the album. But don’t take my word for it, watch the video underneath and judge for yourself!
