On Wednesday 24th August, Oklahoma’s Other Lives bring their other-worldly folk to Oxford’s Jericho Tavern. Touring their brand new album, Tamer Animals, the band have found comparisons with folk starlets Fleet Foxes and not just for their glorious facial hair. Expect acoustic guitars and glorious harmonies, yes, but Other Lives also bring an extra element to their music which goes beyond the rural idealism of Robin Pecknold and chums.
Inspired much more by the vastness of the cosmos (just check out the Moon/2001: A Space Odyssey style video for track ‘For 12’ underneath), Other Lives take great care in the production of their cinematic soundscapes. You can tell that they are clearly inspired by the ethereal weirdness of bands like Radiohead and Bon Iver as well as by the new folk Americana of Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear.
Tamer Animals won some pretty positive reviews across the board from Pitchfork (7.4/10 – “a record that takes you places”), BBC Online (“the most uniquely sublime, meticulous and heroic 40 minutes of 2011”) and Consequence Of Sound (7/10 – “as if you’re dreaming while awake”).
