Everyone’s favourite Oxford venue, the Jericho Tavern is set to welcome Simone Felice this coming Saturday. Many will recognise him as drummer, writer and vocalist of The Felice Brothers and the creator of The Duke & The King, but this Saturday he will take to the stage under his own name playing tracks from his self-titled debut album released earlier this week as part of a full on five piece band featuring Simi Stone also of The Duke & The King.
Simone’s impassioned and bleak tales are set to strikingly simple arrangements displaying not just his musical talent but his literary and poetic – certainly spawned from him being a published poet and novelist. His lead single ‘You And I Belong’ which features guest vocals from Mumford & Sons as well as help from Ben Lovett on the soundboards finds Simone unashamedly praising the morning. I do feel, however, that this track is somewhat constrained by the silky smooth production – a smoothness that would rival Justin Bieber’s chin – a problem that unfortunately seems to restrain the rest of the album.
Thankfully in a live atmosphere this shall not be the case and his true rawness will be allowed to flourish. Also, for those of you who recall The Duke & The King’s amazing set at Truck festival last year, Simone was the one who displayed – in my own words – a “hilarious level of drunkenness”, a repeat of which would be gratefully received – by me if not by anyone else.
To catch Simone at the first leg of his massive UK tour you can purchase tickets here. Be sure to have a quick watch of his debut single below as well.
