Excitement and, by association, promotion continues to build for The XX’s forthcoming record, Coexist. Produced by boy genius Jamie XX, the album was recorded between November and May at their own studio. A second tune from the record, ‘Chained’, is now available at www.thexx.info/chained.
Unsurprisingly tense, sparse and melancholic, the track is one that again shows little deviation from the band’s first album; I suppose it must be difficult to discontinue such a successful formula. The track is nonetheless a good one, with Jamie’s click track percussion gently ebbing and flowing as the song progresses; adding emphasis and intrigue with his unique grasp of silence and space.
The first album was excellent but overplayed; it is thus difficult to remember The XX for much apart from a soundtrack to sad/happy/tense/relaxed/victorious/unsuccessful moments from Masterchef. However, I think these new tracks are a cut above; especially with regards to Jamie XX’s understated technical prowess.
Coexist is out on September 10th on Young Turks.
