The Big Pink are an odd band. Named after a seminal country/folk/rock album by The Band, but sounding nothing like Bob Dylan’s backing group, they have instead opted for producing an electronically geared wall of sound of Krautrock synth bleeping and guitar feedback. They have amazing songs in their back catalogue (‘Velvet’) and really annoying – yet undeniably catchy – ones too (‘Dominos’). Regardless of whether you think they’re a band who craft the perfect amount of pop inspired abrasive noise or they are car advert fodder, they are back with a bloody good track.
‘Stay Gold’ is the new single to be taken from the band’s impending sophomore Future This due for release in January 2012 courtesy of 4AD. The track has already been dubbed the “Hottest Record In The World” by Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show and will be released as a single on November 7th.
If you’re wondering whether it falls in to the ‘Velvet’ or ‘Dominos’ category, the answer is – thankfully – right down the middle. It’s got the pop hook without being overly repetitive, shouty and annoying (although it is a little bit), yet doesn’t divulge in too much sonic shoegaze experimental wanky sound (although it does a little bit).
