If you’ve ever seen the documentary The Devil And Daniel Johnston and were suitably moved by the narrative of a man with a serious mental illness, spilling his heart on stage most nights, on the verge of breakdown, then the fragile intensity of Perfume Genius will surely be right up your street. You sicko!
I’m not suggesting that the man behind Perfume Genius, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas, is mentally unstable to the point where he may throw the keys of a small aircraft out of the window (like Daniel Johnston once did whilst his father flew over a forest), but he certainly plugs into the same delicate catharsis that has made Johnston an cult hero for the disaffected and restless.
His album Learning won mass acclaim last year from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, NME (giving it 9/10) and Sunday Times (naming it one of the best albums of 2010), going on to win over fans with his intensely moving live shows. Don’t feel like you’ve missed out though, as he has recently announced a European tour to commence this May!
