Scrolling through my Facebook feed skipping over the usual banalities led me to a rather exciting discovery. Oxford veterans Radiohead have announced their new album. Once again it’s a self release, digital first then physical release later. However, its not a pay what you choose, that excitement is already taken care of for you.
The King of Limbs was announced yesterday morning via Dead Air Space, the band’s blog, in a post even less low key than “Well, the new album is finished, and it’s coming out in 10 days …”. This time all there is is “THANK YOU FOR WAITING”, and a hand drawn image. This takes you through to the pre-order store.
The digital & physical releases are available for pre-order today. The digital will hit you in either WAV or MP3 on Saturday Feb. 19th, and the physical release will come later on Monday May 9th. Once again this leaves the physical release (at £24 more than the respective digital formats) just for the true fans with patience.
According to their website The King of Limbs may be the world’s first “Newspaper Album”. What precisely this means we can’t be sure, but more details of the package are given. In exchange for £30/33 you will get 2 clear 10” vinyl, and a CD, along with “Many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-colour piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together. Also there is a chance to win a signed one-off 2 track 12” vinyl. Quite an exciting setup.
The whole thing sounds like Dr Tchock and Stanley Donwood have created a full newspaper layout desk with their own artwork and stories to fill it in. I’m sure we’ll get more details as the release dates get closer but for now, all we can do is pay, wait and sit back and watch the media frenzy. What a nice Valentine’s gift from the Radiohead boys!
