Date: April 2014
Artist: Mutes

Mutes’ self-titled debut EP was written and recorded during a single summer that was heavy on late nights and red wine. Released via One Note Forever Records in 2014.

The EP kicks off with ‘hope, etc’, a spiralling incantation of voices, colliding towards an ominous wash of distorted noise. ‘M.P.D.G’ begins with a chorus of discordant guitars sloping into a glorious sweep of My Bloody Valentine rhythmical strumming and ambiguous vocals.

The EP’s middle section is focused around two improvised ambient tracks – ‘Port Sunlight’ and ‘Phonophobia’ – owing to the early work of Lotus Plaza. The EP ends on the high of ‘Smother’, an easy-on-the-ear dream-pop gem built upon an irresistible bass-line and layers of glistening guitars and ebullient vocal harmonies.
