Oxford indie-pop/shoegazers Toliesel have released their debut EP Contours today via One Note Forever Records. The four-track EP, which includes recent single ‘Whispered Half Asleep’, is now available to purchase via the One Note Forever Records online store.
With a mutual love for both the rustic Americana of heroes Neil Young, Midlake and Crosby, Stills and Nash, as well as the bittersweet indie pop of Death Cab For Cutie and Local Natives, Contours’ sound is one that reflects these contrasting inspirations; at moments delicate and reflective, a heartbeat later, pulsing and uplifiting. Frontman Jack Olchawski expands on this ethos behind the EP.
“We love bands that are willing to take risks in their music, but equally, we are all aware of the power of an excellently crafted pop song, and we always wanted our sound to feel at ease with both.
Lead single, ‘Whispered Half Asleep’ sets the precedent; it’s questioning melody, elegant guitar work and glowing chorus, documenting a fleeting feeling of doubt and unease in a relationship, before concluding in a punch of grit and bittersweet resolve.
This clash of the beautiful and the melancholy runs right through the EP, from the gentle violas that build and sway on the lilting ‘Lighthouse’, to the anthemic, crushing crescendo of closing piece ‘Brothers’.
It isn’t just the precise craft of these songs that has seen Toliesel become one of the most talked about acts in Oxfordshire however. In a city that continues to over-achieve, Toliesel are known for their blistering live show, which has seen them support Two Gallants, The Twilight Sad, Sweet Baboo and Ellen & The Escapades, to name but a few.
With the release of Contours, it is time for the wider music-adoring community to hear what has had Oxford buzzing for years.
