Formed by Oxford-based songwriters Jack and Rob with the ideal of exploring the craft of songwriting, and primarily influenced by heroes such as Lennon and McCartney, the Wilson brothers and Nick Lowe, Toliesel began as a duo with a love for melody. With time, the urge to recruit a full band took hold and guitarists Adam and Tom were enlisted and with them they bought a love for the dynamic guitar work of Neil Young and experimentalism of the likes of Tom Verlaine, Nels Cline and Johnny Greenwood.
By the time bassist/producer Gabriele and drummer Nick joined the ranks, Toliesel were beginning to attract attention in their local music scene, quickly becoming a much admired and enjoyed live act, having played at Truck Festival and supported artists as diverse as the Twilight Sad, Dawes, the Fauns, and Ellen and the Escapades.
Toliesel’s debut EP Contours was released in 2013 and measured Toliesel’s love for Americana and dream-pop. From the bittersweet opener ‘Whispered Half Asleep’ with its chiming reverb-laden guitars and questioning vocal melodies, to the brooding and bombastic indie-rock finale ‘Brothers’, slathered with distorted shoegaze textures.
Their follow-up EP Wilderness Blues will be released in early 2015 and finds the band embracing a darker, grungier sound, one that will see them push their sound into noisier territory, whilst retaining their exemplary knack for crafting intriguing songs with memorable melodies.
